Getting started
Before you setup your VPN connection, you will need the following pieces of information:
- VPN server name: This will be either an IP address or a host name.
- VPN username: If you are a member of a Windows domain, this is most likely the same username you use to login to your computer.
- VPN password: If you are a member of a Windows domain, this is most likely the same username you use to login to your computer.
- (optional) DNS domain name suffix
Setting up the VPN connection
- Click the Start button and select Control Panel.
- Double click on Network Connections.
- From the menu, select File and then New Connection...
- Click the Next button.
- Select Connect to the network at my workplace and then click the Next button.
- Select Virtual Private Network connection and then click the Next button.
- Type in the name of your VPN connection. This is an arbitrary setting. If you work for ACME Brick you could name your connection ACME Brick VPN.
- Select Do not dial the initial connection and then click the Next button.
- Enter the IP address or hostname of your VPN server and then click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button.
- Click on the Properties button.
- Click on the Networking tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the list and then click the Properties button.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Uncheck the Use default gateway on remote network setting.
- This step is optional. Only update this setting if you have been directed to do so.
Click on the DNS tab and fill in the DNS suffix for this connection: and then click the OK button. Continue clicking the OK button until you see the dialog in the next step.
- You are now ready to initiate the VPN connection. Fill in the User name and Password with your information and then click the Connect button.
- Once the connection is made you will see the following notification in your system tray.
